Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), Abdelilah Benkirane, said a “revision” of the constitution is necessary, so that the government officials and citizens alike know their duties and rights.
During the opening of the 13th Forum of Justice and Development Youth on Sunday in Fez, Benkirane addressed the current crisis in the Rif, as well as the government deadlock he encountered as head of government.
In a response to King Mohammed VI’s Throne Day’s speech, which accused the political parties of delaying Al Hoceima development projects and hiding behind the palace once they mismanage a task, Benkirane asked the king “to use his powers and capabilities to solve the problem of Al Hoceima.”
“It is only the King who’s capable of repairing the situation. We can’t help but turn to him once we are incapable of settling a problem,” said Benkirane, adding that “It is the King’s duty to attend to his country’s concerns.”
During the meeting, Benkirane also spoke of the six months he tried and failed to form a government, saying that the process “manipulated to prevent him from forming the government.”He called for an investigation to identify the officials caused the deadlock.
Benkirane said that “Moroccans must know who united the four parties,” referring to Liberal parties, the Popular Movement, the Constitutional Union and the Socialist Union, “who intern turned against him and prevented him from establishing the government,” alluding the government deadlock.
Speaking on his presence in the Moroccan political scene, Benkirane said that “I am still alive, and political officials, including myself, must work hard to bring out the best of this country.”
“This is not a football match, nor a a game that could be won. Its is rather a question of the dignity of citizens and the future of the country,” stated the former head of government.
