An explosive device detonated Monday in southeastern Baghdad, leaving at least nine persons killed and injured, a security source said.

The bomb, which was placed near shops in Baghdad's Nahrawan, killed an Iraqi civilian and injured nine others, the source added.

In a separate incident, military intelligence units managed to kill a suicide bomber and destroy his booby-trapped car in the northern Salahuddin governorate, the army media center said.

The suicide bomber, who was killed in the Monday's preemptive operation, planned to target one of Baghdad's suburbs, the center added.
