Canada\'s trade deficit widened in June to CAN$1.56 billion (US$1.57 billion) as sales of energy and automotive products slowed, according to official data released Thursday. The figure was up sharply from the upwardly revised CAN$1.04 billion deficit posted in May, Statistics Canada said. Exports fell 1.7 percent to CAN$36.5 billion, an outcome that was \"largely the result of declines in energy products and automotive products,\" the government agency said. Petroleum and coal products accounted for much of the decline, and crude petroleum was also a contributing factor, it said.Imports decreased 0.2 percent to CAN$38.0 billion, also led by energy products. Crude petroleum imports fell 22.1 percent amid plant shutdowns for maintenance. Canada\'s trade surplus with the United States, its largest trading partner, narrowed slightly to CAN$3.63 billion in June, from CAN$3.7 billion in May.
