Thousands of chocolate bars are being pulled off shelves across the UAE after a piece of red plastic was found in a Snickers bar sold in Germany.
The affected brands are Snickers Miniatures, Mars Minis and Miniatures and Best of Our Minis, which were produced in Holland.
The UAE is part of a worldwide recall by confectionery manufacturer Mars that affects 55 countries, including Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.
People who may have bought any of the affected chocolates have been urged not to eat them. No exact figure for the amount of chocolates that will be recalled was available.
“This is a voluntary measure taken by Mars to avoid any possibility of health hazards that may be caused by the presence of pieces of plastics,” the company said on Wednesday.
The recall is limited only to the following products that were produced in Veghel, Netherlands; Snickers Miniatures, 150g, expiry dates 4 December 2016 to 8 January 2017; Mars Minis, 144g, expiry from 11 December 2016 to 8 January 2017; Mars Minis, 270g, from 11 December 2016 to 8 January 2017; Mars Miniatures, 150g, dated 4 December 2016 to 1 January 2017; Best of Our Minis, 710g, from 11 September 2016 to13 November 2016; Best of Our Minis, 500g, expiry date from 4 September 2016 to 13 November 2016.
“This incident has no impact on any of our same chocolate brands or products outside the above list or produced in other countries regardless of format, size, batches or packaging,” said the company.
“Mars Gulf would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused to our consumers by this incident. This precautionary measure is driven by consumer safety.”
