South Korea's No. 2 automaker Kia Motors Corp. said Monday that its annual global sales slipped 1% from a year earlier in 2016 on a decline in overseas sales.
The automaker's global sales came to 3,020,217 cars last year, compared to 3,050,834 cars sold the previous year, the company said in a press release.
Domestic sales gained 1.4% on-year to 535,000 units, but overseas sales shrank 1.5% to 2,485,217.
The drop in overseas sales was attributed to a cut in outbound shipments of locally produced cars, state news agency (Yonhap) reported.
Overseas sales of Kia cars produced in South Korea plunged 15.1% on-year, partly due to an equally serious drop in output here caused by a series of labor strikes.
Overseas sales of cars produced overseas jumped 10.7% in 2016.
For December alone, the South Korean carmaker sold 314,938 cars globally, up 2.2% from the same month last year. Domestic sales dropped 7% to 49,600 cars, while overseas sales gained 4.2% to 265,338 units.
