Switzerland rallied to a 1-1 draw with Romania at Euro 2016 on Wednesday but the point wasn't good enough to see them qualify for the knock-out rounds for the first time.
Bogdan Stancu opened the scoring for Romania with an 18th-minute penalty, but Admir Mehmedi levelled for the Swiss with a ferocious volley in the 57th minute of a not classy but entertaining affair at the Parc des Princes.
The Swiss pressed in vain for the winner in front of 43,576 fans which would have sent them into the last 16. They top Group A with four points from hosts France (three) who play Albania (zero) later Wednesday in Marseille and will advance as the first team with a win. Romania have one point.
