Ligue 1 sides Lorient, Sochaux and Brest were upset by lower-league opposition in the French Cup today, but a Joe Cole hat-trick took holders Lille into the round of 32 and Marseille also cruised through. Brest fell 2-0 at current National (third-tier) leaders Niort, while Lorient and Sochaux both went down to teams from Ligue 2. Sochaux were beaten 4-1 by Bastia and Lorient were undone by an 80th-minute Yohann Riviere goal in a pulsating 4-3 defeat at Le Havre. Victory was doubly painful for Sochaux, who slipped to second-bottom in Ligue 1 prior to the winter break and who have not won a game since 6 November. Auxerre required a Dariusz Dudka penalty three minutes from the end of extra time to see off valiant fifth-division Chambly 1-0, while there were also wins for top-tier sides Nice, Dijon and Ajaccio. Lille begin their defence of the trophy with an emphatic 6-0 success at sixth-division minnows Chantilly, in which on-loan Liverpool midfielder Cole claimed the first senior hat-trick of his club career. In one of the round\'s most intriguing ties, Marseille won 5-0 against five-time cup winners Red Star in a game that took place at Stade de France. Paris-based Red Star were one of France\'s most glamorous clubs in the inter-war years but there was no return to former glories as they fell to a Jordan Ayew brace and second-half goals from Mathieu Valbuena, Andre Ayew and Benoit Cheyrou. In the first all-Ligue 1 tie of the round, Rennes eased past Nancy 3-0. Carlo Ancelotti will oversee his first competitive game as Paris Saint-Germain coach when his new club visit fifth-tier Saint-Colomban Locmine on Sunday.
