Said was even imprisoned by President Sadat Cairo - Arabstoday Well-known Egyptian geologist Roshdy Said died aged 93 on Friday, following an esteemed career in science spanning a lifetime. However he will be remembered first and foremost for his work on the Nile Basin. Said was born in 1920. He graduated from the Faculty of Science at Egyptian University in 1937, going on to receive a doctorate from Harvard University in the 1950s. The geologist then went on to become a professor at Cairo University in 1968, specializing in geology research and mining until 1977. Said later gained membership of the country’s parliament but left Egypt after he was imprisoned by former President Anwar Sadat in September 1981. Egyptian economic researcher Ahmed el-Sayed el-Nagar, speaking in a Facebook post, celebrated Said’s contribution to water research, focusing in particular on the Nile Basin. “He worked to serve the interests of the country,” el-Nagar said. Said lived in the United States with his daughter. It is unclear yet whether she will return the body to Egypt for burial.
