Riyadh - Al Maghrib Today
Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has expressed his condemnation of the "irresponsible media attacks carried out by some Qatari news outlets toward the GCC and its Secretary General," describing it as an unjust campaign that exceeded all customs, values and media professionalism.
In a press statement, Al-Zayani expressed his deep surprise at the attempt by some Qatari media to hold his position as GCC Secretary General as responsible for resolving Qatar's crisis, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.
"Officials in the Qatari government and media are fully aware that the solution of the crisis and the end of its repercussions are in the hands of the GCC leaders, the members of the Supreme Council, and no one else. It is not the responsibility and duties of the Secretary General who receives and executes the decisions, directives and orders of the Supreme Council and the Ministerial Council only, as per the provisions of the GCC statute," Al-Zayani said.
The GCC chief expressed his disapproval of attempts by some journalists in Qatar to link the crisis with his Bahraini nationality and the well-known positions in the kingdom, affirming his full commitment to shouldering his responsibilities, tasks and duties assigned by the Supreme Council to preserve the cohesion of the GCC as well as its achievements and its regional and international standing.
But at the same time, Al Zayani remains a noble son of Bahrain, loyal to its leaders and committed to his patriotism.
Al-Zayani called upon the Qatari media to stop its current approach that harms, causes divisions and stalls the fixing of inter-brotherly relations. It also hinders the good mediation efforts undertaken by Kuwait's Emir Shaikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah known for his wisdom, loyalty and love for the GCC countries and peoples, SPA reported.
