President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi inspected digging operations of the New Suez Canal early Friday.
Presidential spokesman Ehab Badawy said Sisi met workers and listened to explanation about their work. Sisi also asked if they were facing any obstacles, Badaway added.
Sisi stressed that the New Suez Canal is a top priority project, Badawy said.
The president said he would be closely following up national projects hoped to revive the Egyptian economy and reduce poverty, Badawy added.
Sisi was firm on the need to inaugurate the project on time and without any delay, stressing the promise made to the Egyptian people should be honored, Badawy said.
Sisi made a visit to the location three days after he launched the project, which he considered "Egypt's gift to the world", as it would greatly contribute to naval transport and international trade movement, the spokesman said.
The project is also meant to achieve development in Egypt, bringing in investments and initiating new industrial projects, Badawy said, adding all this will positively affect the Egyptian economy and will create jobs for youth.
