Doctor of Ophthalmology Heba Metwally

Consultant of children's eyes and strabismus, doctor of Ophthalmology, fellow of the British Royal College of Surgeons, and member of the American and European Association of Children's Eyes, Heba Metwally said that, parents get confused between medical glasses and vision correction procedures, and some wrong rumors about how to treat adaptive strabismus related to the medical glasses, as the child could have internal strabismus that completely disappear after wearing the glasses.

She told “Al Maghrib Today” that, this kind of strabismus doesn’t need surgery and requires wearing medical glasses all the time. She said parents wonder all the time about a solution for this problem such as vision correction as a replacement to the glasses, confirming that, performing such procedures using Lasik, and femto Lasik on children is wrong and unsafe.

Using such procedures on children hasn’t been scientifically proven by specialized international associations in ophthalmology, because the child’s growth is accompanied by a change in the measurement in his vision until he is 18 years old, and using Lasik before that can only damage the child’s cornea.

The approved way to treat laziness that may accompany this type of strabismus by International Associations of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics is, to cover the healthy eye for number of hours and monitor the strengthen of the vision in it to stimulate the lazy eye one. Heba added that, there are some new experimental techniques to fix this laziness, but these techniques are not related to Lasik in any way.
