Dubai Municipality (DM) inspectors arrested 282 law violators, including street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers in March. Ibrahim Obeid Marzouqi, head of Markets Department at the DM, said the move against the lawbreakers had also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality goods and pirated CDs. “Civic inspectors conduct daily spot checks in streets and public places to prevent street vending, begging and car washing in public places by individuals in violation of the ruling by the Ministry of Labour in this regard. “Inspectors at the Control Unit of the Markets Administration Section in the Assets Management Department carry out regular checks to take action against the violators,” he added. According to Marzouki, last month the inspectors caught 282 people, including 196 street vendors, 63 beggars, 20 car washers and three illegal butchers and fish cleaners. “A total of 2,932 counterfeit products, including readymade garments, perfumes, cameras and watches that were of fake international brands were confiscated,” he said. “Besides, some 2,043 DVDs with pirated films, 85 pornographic movies, in addition to 8.2 tonnes of foodstuff items, including 121 boxes of fruits and vegetables, were seized last month,” he explained. The lawbreakers, who belong to various nationalities, would be handed over to the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department for deportation in co-ordination with the Dubai Police. The seized goods would be destroyed and disposed off safely after legal action against the violators.
