The American science fiction adventure film directed by Francis Lawrence grossed 225.7 million U.S. dollars domestically and 254.4 million U.S. dollars internationally, according to media reports on Monday.
DreamWorks 3D computer-animated action comedy film "Penguins of Madagascar", released on Wednesday stood at second place with a 25.8 million U.S. dollars. The film was directed by Simon J. Smith and Eric Darnell, and stars the voices of Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Conrad Vernon, Christopher Knights.
Disney's animated romp "Big Hero 6" and Paramount's space-time saga "Interstellar" respectively held onto the third and fourth positions with 18.7 million U.S. dollars and 15.8 million U.S. dollars in their fourth weekend at the box office.
The Warner Bros comedy sequel "Horrible Bosses 2" debuted in fifth place with chill 15.7 million U.S. dollars, though it was expected to attract similar numbers of moviegoers as its predecessor “Horrible Bosses”, which opened with 28 million U.S. dollars in July 2011.
