Fasting leads to mental and physical health and detoxifies body, says dietician Morteza Safavi. One can guarantee his mental and physical health by fasting during Ramadan, because it detoxifies various body organs and purifies him spiritually and provides inner calmness and prevents mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Safavi also warns against drinking icy water and soda when breaking fast as they hurt gastro intestinal (GI) system. It is recommended to break fast with lukewarm water or milk to help GI system to function well, Safavi explains. Safavi also suggests fasting people to eat dates and raisin during sahari (meal before dawn during Ramadan) and iftar (evening meal when breaking fast) because they prevent a decrease of blood sugar during the fasting hours. The dietician also says use of watery fruits during sahari lowers appetite for drinking water during the day. Safavi also says fasting is very useful for overweight people and those with high cholesterol. Generally, one can keep his health by fasting during Ramadan if he takes halal, clean, and healthy food. Study has shown the fasting people who observe a healthy diet are healthier and develop a more powerful immune system than those who do not.
