Imad Elattaby

Hirak protestor Imad Elattaby was pronounced dead Tuesday, August 8, after over two weeks of coma resulting from a head injury suffered in Al Hoceima, revealed Al Hoceima’s public prosecutor in a statement.

The 25-year-old was hit on the head during the July 20 March in the northern city, before being flown in a helicopter to the military hospital in Rabat.

Erarlier this day, his lawyer, Abdessadak Elbouchattaoui also took to Facebook to disclose the sad news.

“In contact with his brother just a few days ago, the military hospital in Rabat officially confirmed to him [Imad’s brother] the martyrdom of Imad Elattaby,” wrote Elbouchattaoui. Official and media accounts diverge on the cause of his injury.

According to Al Yaoum24, the protester was injured during the “violent police intervention,” with other outlets claiming that Elattaby was hit in the head by the tear gas bombs, used by polices forces during the march.

Local authorities stated that he was injured by stones thrown by other participants in the demonstration.

The local authorities have said that an investigation was opened to establish the truth of the incident. After being transported to the military hospital in Rabat, pictures of the Elattaby were shared on Twitter, showing him lying in coma in hospital with tubes in his mouth.
