Following the release of Diyali, a play directed by Moroccan drama producer, Naima Zitan, widespread controversy and intrigue has been building around her latest theatre release, in which she tackles
the taboo issue of female sexuality. Zitan is the founder of Moroccan drama company, Théâtre Aquarium, which is
hosting the play. Zitan, along with her theatre troupe, plan on performing the piece in several cities across the country over the next month, a tour which has riled many in conservative, and even artistic circles.
The play addresses the issue of a woman\'s freedom to use her genitalia in the way she wants, without ownership from anyone.
Naima Zitan, spoke to Arabstoday and said the play seeks to break the
psychological barrier which makes the issue seem controversial in many people\'s minds. She said a woman should not be ashamed of her sexual organs and aims to convey that message by getting characters to speak frankly about their sexuality.
The play was first showcased at the French Cultural Council in Rabat, and presented once again at the troupe’s headquarters in the al-Akari district.
Acting in the production are Nouria Benbrahim, Farida Bouazzaoui and Amal Benhaddou.
