In light of security conditions’ deterioration in Libya, the activity of smuggling gangs increased in north Africa, which made Algerian security forces on the borders battle everyday with weapons, gold and fuel smugglers.
Algerian Defense ministry data finally revealed the connection between drugs smuggling gangs and weapons smuggling gangs in Libya, taking advantage of the security situation to transfer huge amounts of cannabis and cocaine coming from Latin America. These smuggling operations made Algeria to increase its security, dividing the monitoring process between 4 systems on top of them is Algerian Army, along with daily security check points on minor and major roads, especially crossings connecting north to south, east and west.
The Algerian Army managed to arrest 3 drug dealers last week, and obtain a heavy machine gun , amount of ammunition and processed cannabis, they also destroyed a four-wheel vehicle in "Shanashin" southeast of Tindouf. This is the second operation of this kind in least than a week, according to Algerian Ministry of Defense statement.
Former parliament member for Ouargla in southern Algeria, Sassi Ben Arousi said that despite the security deterioration in some areas, some other places like Ilizi, Wadi and Tamanrasset provinces witness stability, thanks to strict control imposed by the Algerian security services.
He said in a statement to “ Arab Today”, that the Algerian citizen should do his part by reporting any suspicious activities like smuggling, adding that major countries have acknowledge the Algerian army’s professionalism. The MP from Yazi province near the border with Libya, Abbas Bouamama also said that the security situation at borders is disturbing, but the security services managed to control it ,giving the amount of weapons the Algerian army restore in these areas. He asked the residents of these areas to help the army regarding this matter.
MP in the Algerian parliament, Baba Ali also asked the southern residents near borders that connect Algeria, Tunis and Libya to help the Algerian forces fight terrorism by reporting any suspicious activities and any drug dealers. In a statement to “Arab Today” ,he praised the army role in securing the borders from terrorist organizations, illegal immigration and weapons smuggling , adding that despite the security situation on borders and Libya, the Algerian army was able to protect these borders.
