Algiers - Sofiane Siyoucef

A specialised unit in the Algerian army managed to eliminate four terrorists in the province of Tamanrasset, south of Algeria and close to Tinzaouatine, which was recently controlled by opposition
parties, following the outbreak of fighting between rebels from the "National Azawad movement" and units from the Malian army, a source reported to 'Arabstoday'.
The source revealed that the operation was carried out with the assistance of a military aircraft during attempts of infiltration into Algerian territory coming from Mali.
The source also reported the recovery of a considerable amount of live ammunition and weapons. Algeria got involved in the situation in Northern Mali and the subsequent fierce battles between rebels and Malian army, which left dozens dead nearby.
The Algerian government sought to convince both parties of disarmament in a meeting. However, the Azawad movement, which was not included in the meeting, did not abide by the statement which called for stopping the fighting.
Bin Zughayyar, head of the Algerian Red Crescent, revealed that the number of displaced people to Algeria was not large, most of which were rebels who have relatives in Alegeia, adding that the situation does not require camps to receive them.
Malian president Amadou Toumani Toure earlier approved an initiative submitted by political leaders, which was recommended by the Parliament, in addition to an action plan in order to restore peace to the country.
