Using the well-trodden theme of chasing your dream and referencing in its title a well-trodden number by the American Idol alumnus Kelly Clarkson, A Moment Like This is as schmaltzy as it gets. Anita Notaro’s take on the rags-to-riches story of yet another small-town Cinderella follows the same worn-out path that is often depicted in chick-lit, Disney movies, and of course, the aforementioned televised singing competition. Antonia Trent’s journey to stardom starts with an offer to audition for Ireland’s premier X Factor-styled talent show That’s Talent!, but the prospect of showcasing her prodigious singing abilities before the entire country has Trent quaking in her boots, requiring plenty of support from close friends and the handsome village doctor. However, her low self-esteem does nothing to deter Notaro from painfully clichéd descriptions of her voice and looks. As expected, fame arrives with its usual trappings of scrupulous industry executives, lack of privacy and a sneaky rival. Will Antonia survive it all and nab her Prince Charming in the end? No prizes for guessing the correct answer. From / The National
