Disney has scheduled Ghost in the Shell for 2017.
Sources report the motion picture company will premiere a live-action adaptation of the Masamune Shirow manga April 14, 2017. Actress Scarlett Johansson is reportedly confirmed to star as Motoko Kusanagi in the film.
Disney moved up Chris Pine disaster drama The Finest Hours to October 9, 2015, and pushed back its Jon Favreau-directed The Jungle Book to April 15, 2016. A remake of Pete's Dragon will be released August 12, 2016.
Ghost in the Shell debuted in 1989, and inspired several animated films and a television series. The story follows Kusanagi, a cyborg who works to counter cyber-crime and terrorist attacks for the fictional law enforcement division Public Security Section 9.
Johansson most recently appeared as the title character in Luc Besson thriller Lucy. The actress will reprise Black Widow in Disney-Marvel sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron in May, and will star in new Cohen brothers comedy Hail, Caesar! in 2016.
