Beyoncé channels Rosie the Riveter in a new Instagram photo.
The 32-year-old singer recreated the cultural icon's "We Can Do It!" poster at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. Beyoncé wears a denim jumpsuit and red bandana similar to Rosie's, and poses with her arm flexed in front of a backdrop emblazoned with the slogan. The picture has received over 1 million likes since the star posted it Tuesday morning.
The original poster was a WWII wartime propaganda painting by J. Howard Miller intended to boost worker morale at Westinghouse Electric. The image depicts a strong female worker, but is not specifically meant to be Rosie. The connection between Rosie the Riveter and the "We Can Do It!" poster wasn't made until the 1980s feminist movement, and Miller is thought to have based the woman in the painting on a United Press International photograph of factory worker Geraldine Hoff.
