Brazilian state oil and gas giant Petrobras has discovered a new deep-water oil well in the country's southeast Espirito Santo Basin, the company said Friday.
The well, uncovered at a depth of 1,319 meters, is located 81 km from Vitoria, capital of Espirito Santo state, in an area with proven reserves of gas and natural-gas condensate, the firm said in a press release.
The well is located in the so-called pre-salt depths of the Atlantic Ocean, meaning it could lie under a 2,000-meter-thick layer of salt.
Brazil has in recent years discovered vast reserves of pre-salt crude that could potentially turn the country into one of the world's leading oil producers.
Petrobras is the operator and full production concession holder in the area where the new well was discovered.
