Spotify, a Swedish company, in partner with other Web and media companies such as Rolling Stone, Last.fm, has unveiled its new goal: to become an app platform for music. At an event in New York on Wednesday, Spotify CEO and Founder Daniel Ek also revealed the company\'s goal to edge out its streaming rivals: apps. Spotify, a Swedish company, which lets users stream music online and on mobile devices, will begin rolling out a variety of music-related applications. One will allow users to purchase concert for the band they\'re listening to via Songkick, which lists upcoming concerts by location. The new version of Spotify will include access to applications built by third parties that take advantage of the Spotify library and community. Rolling Stone, for example, will integrate its year-end magazine issue with Spotify\'s service so readers can instantly play most, if not all, of the songs featured in the articles. Currently, all of the apps will be free and available on both the free and paid versions of Spotify. New apps can be developed in HTML5 using Javascript API and anyone can become a developer and submit apps. Examples of apps that could appear on the service include an app that displays song lyrics, a concert app, a ticketmaster-like app that lets you buy concert tickets or merchandise, and many others.
