Tropical storm Joaquin has been upgraded to a hurricane as it moves toward the Bahamas, the US National Hurricane Center said Wednesday.

It is packing maximum sustained winds of 120 km/hr (75 mph) and is 395 kilometers (245 miles) northeast of the islands, the center said.
