Hurricane Newton made landfall early Tuesday near the Los Cabos resort area on Mexico's west coast, packing 90-mile (145-kilometer) winds, the US National Hurricane Center said.

"Hurricane winds are spreading over southern Baja California," the center said in a bulletin that placed the storm five miles (eight kilometers) southeast of Cabo San Lucas, a popular tourist destination.
