Last month was the hottest August in modern history across the planet, in the latest sign of an unusually warm year across land and sea surfaces, US government scientists said Thursday.

"This was the sixth month in 2015 that has broken its monthly temperature record (February, March, May, June, July and August)," said a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
