French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday proposed a EU-wide tax on financial transactions -- reigniting a long-running debate on expanding a levy already in place in France and Britain.

"Let's take this tax and extend it to the rest of Europe," Macron said in a key speech on the EU's future, adding the proceeds of the tax would go towards development aid.
