A political crisis over Catalonia's bid to declare independence from Spain dragged Madrid stocks down by three percent on Wednesday.

The key IBEX 35 index fell below the symbolic 10,000 point mark, as lawmakers in the region called for a session next Monday to declare independence in defiance of the national government.
