Spanish senators met Friday to adopt drastic measures to seize control of rebel region Catalonia in a bid to frustrate its drive to break away.

The much-anticipated session kicked off in the presence of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, whose government has proposed the measures and whose Popular Party holds a majority in the Senate, meaning the regional takeover will almost certainly be adopted.
