Counting started Monday after nearly 5,000 delegates from South Africa's ruling ANC party cast secret ballots to choose their next leader, a statement said, after repeated delays to the vote.

"We can now confirm that counting of votes has started," the ANC said in a statement sent to journalists. The result was expected later Monday.
