The United States has landed marines in Syria to take part in the battle to retake Raqqa from the Islamic State. The undisclosed number of troops will deploy howitzers to fire on the de facto ISIS capital in the country, Pentagon officials told the Washington Post.
The marines are part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and deployed from the ships in the region in recent days. They will support mostly Kurdish forces in the planned attack on Raqqa. The Trump administration is considering sending in attack helicopters and more special forces to join the several hundred already deployed in Syria.
During his presidential campaign Donald Trump said he would favor sending up to 30,000 U.S. ground troops to the region to fight ISIS.
