Tribesmen in three villages in eastern Syria have driven out Islamic State for the Levant (ISIL/ISIS) militants, in a rare display of local resistance to the group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Friday.
Tribesmen from Kishkiyeh, Abu Hamam and Granij villages launched the offensive against ISIL on July 30 after the group detained several members of the tribe.
After four days of fighting nine ISIL fighters, three tribesmen and five civilians were killed, the UK-based Syrian opposition activists said.
Reports said the tribesmen also set fire to an ISIL headquarters in Ashara village and that the terrorists had fled from a fifth village in the area.
