The kidnapped Jordanian Ambassador to Libya Fawaz Aitan has been released and is now on his way back to Jordan, Libyan security source confirmed on Tuesday. Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said on Tuesday that the ambassador is in good condition and is expected to arrive in Jordan soon. Aitan was captured by unknown gunmen on April 15 near the Jordanian Embassy in Libya's capital city of Tripoli. Since then the Jordanian and Libyan governments have been holding high- level negotiations for weeks to secure the release of the envoy. Jordan has released a Libyan extremist Mohammed Darsi, who was arrested in 2007, in exchange for Aitan, according to Libyan local media. The North African country has witnessed a wave of kidnappings in the recent two months and Libyan gunmen are still holding two Tunisian diplomats who were captured on March 21 and April 17.
