Saffron Burrows secretly wed girlfriend Alison Balian in August 2013.
The 42-year-old actress revealed the news in an interview with the Guardian. Burrows and Balian have been together since 2007, and the star told the publication she went public with her marriage in order to live an open and forthright life.
"I chose to speak to you because I don't want to lie by omission," she related. "I don't want to hesitate and feel hindered by something I haven't said. Also, I'm really proud of my family and who they are, these two individuals beside me."
Burrows gave birth to their son in 2012, and considers him her "proudest achievement." The actress previously dated both men and women, and admitted she avoided speaking of her family in the past to keep her sexuality from being pinholed.
"I think for a while I was just avoiding conversations, in order to not be labelled in some way that I felt was limiting and not actually true to who I am," she confessed. "I really salute these young women who come out, but if I said I was gay that wouldn't be true."
Burrows is known for starring as Detective Serena Stevens on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and recently portrayed Victoria Hand on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. She currently stars as Cynthia on Mozart in the Jungle, and Balian is a former writer for The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
