Ryan Phillippe says he and ex-wife Reese Witherspoon got married too young.
The 40-year-old actor opened up on his divorce from the 39-year-old actress in an interview with Larry King. Phillippe and Witherspoon were both 23 years old when they wed in June 1999, and officially divorced in October 2007.
"No, I think more of the problem was age," the star told King after the host asked if the split was due to the couple both being actors. "We got together so young. I think it can create issues, two people in this industry, because there's so much noise that goes along with it, but no."
Phillippe and Witherspoon share 15-year-old daughter Ava and 11-year-old son Deacon, and the actor said he and his ex are "very much" still friends. Phillippe has been with current girlfriend Paulina Slagter for four years, while Witherspoon married Jim Toth in March 2011.
Phillippe recently discussed his lifelong struggle with depression in an interview with Elle, and said he passed on the trait to Ava. Witherspoon also admitted to dealing with depression in December 2014, and attributed her career slump to her divorce.
Phillippe last appeared in thriller Catch Hell, and currently stars as Ben Crawford on ABC drama Secrets and Lies. Witherspoon was nominated for an Academy Award for Wild in February, and is scheduled for new action-comedy Hot Pursuit with Sofia Vergara.
