Tokyo shares closed lower on Tuesday with the Nikkei index slipping to a seven-week low, as market sentiment was dampened by the yen's rise against the US dollar.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 103.04 points, or 0.55%, from Monday at 18,787.99.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 8.30 points, or 0.55%, lower at 1,506.33.
Decliners were led by bank, machinery and insurance issues.
The day's turnover was about 2,275.7 billion yen (around 20.14 billion US dollars)
