The event, which was held in association with various health care companies including Sanofi Pasteur, addressed the needs of health care professionals, particularly physicians, clinical microbiologists, researchers, and pharmacists specialized in infectious diseases related to the dengue fever.
“It is important for the scientific community to understand the methods of treatment and management of the dengue virus; educating the medical staff and the public about the risk factors is the priority,” said Dr. Nezar Bahabri, head of the SSMMID.
“Adopting effective control measurements and conducting a strong strategic plan for prevention of the dengue infection is part of the workshop. It is worth mentioning that the number of reported dengue cases between 2013 and 2015 were 9095,” added Dr. Bahabri.
“There are various factors contributing to the increase of dengue cases and its reemergence, including the increase in the number of breeding sites, continual population growth, uncontrolled urbanization, poverty, inadequate environmental management, and change of climate and alteration of geographical distribution of pathogens and vectors. Dengue incidence is higher among males (75 percent) compared to 25 percent among females. The vast majority of dengue cases are found among labors,” said Dr. Naeema Akbar, preventive medicine consultant.
Dr. Rajaa Mohammad Al-Raddadi, Vice President of Saudi Epidemiology Association, said: “There are two studies to further understand dengue in Saudi Arabia: “Dengue Fever Seroprevalence” and “Economic Burden of Dengue Fever.” The findings of the two studies are expected to be published this year.”
