Samsung Electronics says it has agreed to buy a US cloud service startup as it seeks to boost software and services.
The South Korean company said Thursday that its acquisition of Joyent Inc. will allow Samsung to access its own cloud platform rather than renting another company’s data centers to run its Internet-based services. The company did not disclose financial terms.
Demand for cloud computing is growing as more smartphones and Internet-connected devices run apps and software that process data on the Internet. Many businesses run software in remote data centers while more consumers store their photo and documents on their mobile devices using the apps that rely on cloud computing.
The acquisition is the latest of Samsung’s buys of US-based startups in the past few years.
