A medical team from the King Fahd Medical City (KFMC) successfully conducted hysterectomy procedure on a Saudi woman in her fifties, to remove a uterine tumor weighing 28 kg.
Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Obeid, gynecologic oncology surgeon, said the patient was suffering from severe swelling and pain in the abdomen and pelvis as a result of the huge tumor.
Dr. Al-Obeid indicated that the necessary tests and examinations were conducted, such as tissue analysis which showed the presence of a benign tumor in the uterus.
He added that the medical team consisting of gynecologists reviewed the medical reports and decided on the removal of the uterus along with the tumor for the better health of the patient.
The surgery was done without any complications and the patient was discharged from the hospital in excellent medical condition.
Dr. Al Obeid said that uterine fibroids or benign tumors do not usually reach such a huge size. He stressed the need for early diagnosis, which can make the treatment of these tumors medically or surgically possible without the need for hysterectomy.
The senior consultant urged to report symptoms of severe abdominal swelling or pain in the pelvis. Early diagnosis offers an opportunity for early treatment.
