Algerian philosopher and thinker Mustapha Cherif gave Friday evening a lecture on the dialogue of civilizations as part of the 24th International Book Fair of Abu Dhabi which will be held till May 5. Before an interested audience, the specialist in the interreligious and intercultural dialogue Mustapha Cherif underlined the importance, at present, of dialogue between the Muslim world characterized by its moral and spiritual values and the rationality of the Western world for coexistence. For Mustapha Cherif, today’s world is facing a “deep and complex crisis hence the need to open a dialogue between the West and the Muslim world to create a new human civilization sharing a common fate.” The Muslims should, according to the thinker, show moderation in ideas and become more open to the world, especially as we are struggling to combat the stereotypes making form a Muslim a human being who avoids coexistence and modernity. Mustapha Cherif concluded his lecture with the dedication of his book, published in 2008 in the United States of America and translated into English, Islam and the West: A conversation with Jacques Derrida.
