Mubarak W Zamanouh (Mubarak and his Age: What happened to Egypt) by Mohammed Hassanein Haikal, Cairo: Shorouk Publishing House, 2012. Mohammed Hassanein Haikal's new book tells the story of the Mubarak era, revealing secrets about the former president's personality and the circumstances in which he took power after the assassination of president Anwar El-Sadat. This two-volume book examines Mubarak's mysterious personality, stressing that we know very little about him. The writer unfolds Mubarak’s personality in order to understand how he managed the country for 30 years. Haikal, 88, was editor-in-chief of Al-Ahram daily newspaper for 17 years from 1957 to 1974. He was one of the closest journalists to president Nasser and had a strong influence on Egyptian politics until a disagreement with president Sadat in 1974. Since then Haikal has been a respected commentator on Egyptian and Arab affairs. For almost six years he presented a weekly show on Al-Jazeera called With Haikal.
