"He expressed his sympathy for suffering people but showed contempt for the privileged.""The Captive Mind" is a 1953 non-fiction work that details Milosz's experiences as an underground writer during World War II and his position within the political and cultural elite of Poland in the immediate post-war years.Milosz once described the book as having been written "under great inner conflict," according to Yi.Milosz was born in 1911 and died in 2004. After serving as a cultural diplomat at Polish embassies in the United States and France, he defected from his country in the 1950s. He began to live in the United States in 1961.
