In "A Patient's Guide to Liposuction", Dr. Jeffrey Schafer has produced a thorough and concise text written in layman's terms to describe the various procedures of liposuction, the enormous strides in technique and equipment, and those qualities required for candidacy for the treatment. He emphasizes that the procedure is aimed at body contouring, not weight loss, and that while it will not necessarily change your life it will certainly improve your body permanently. This is a practical book. Dr. Schafer takes you step-by-step through the initial consultation, pre-op, game day, and the recuperative period. He suggests that a potential patient see at least 2-3 doctors before selecting one and provides you with the right questions to ask, e.g., how many procedures has the surgeon done, does he answer all your questions without seeming to rush you and provide you with before and after pictures of your procedure on patients that he has actually treated. If you have always thought of liposuction as a procedure that just removes unwanted fat cells from particular parts of the body, you may be surprised to know that there are specific procedures that treat from the face and neck down to the calves and almost anywhere in between. It is even possible to transfer adult stem cells found in fat tissue from one part of the body to a target area, e.g., to smooth out wrinkles in the face. Dr. Schafer's credentials are impeccable. He has been in practice since 1973 as a certified cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon, concentrating the last 25 on liposuction. We cannot imagine anyone seriously considering this procedure without reading this book.
