The first solar car produced in Abu Dhabi will be displayed at Yas Mall starting from Wednesday.
The idea behind the solar car came about in 2013 at the World Future Energy Summit, with Tokai University displaying its own solar car, the ‘Tokai Challenger 2011'.
Inspired by the idea, His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, decided to launch the UAE's own project in building its own solar-powered car.
The project was a success with students from Abu Dhabi's Petroleum Institute managing to build the car, which will now go on display at Yas Mall allowing the public to see and learn about the car for themselves.
Talal Al Dhiyehi, Chief Development Officer at Aldar Properties, said that the display of the solar car at Yas Mall shows its continued commitment to a sustainable and clean future. "Yas Mall has an unrivalled commitment to creating a sustainable future for the capital, incorporating sustainability into our construction, cleaning and waste management. We are proud to be hosting the solar car in Town Square created by the engineering stars of tomorrow, increasing environmental awareness in the UAE,” he said.
The solar car also made its appearance during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, at the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge 2015, the first such event held in the Middle East. The UAE-based solar team came second during the race against international competitors from all around the world, with the solar car managing to race for over 13 hours.
The Abu Dhabi produced solar car has also won awards for its achievement, such as taking first place in the Shell Innovation Awards.
