The UAE has participated in the opening event celebrating the city of Sfax as the Capital of Arab Culture, 2016. Sfax is located 270 km southeast of Tunis and is the capital of the Sfax Governorate and a Mediterranean port. The city is often described as Tunisia's "second city", after Tunis.
The event, which continues until 17th March, 2017, is being held under the slogan, "Culture unites us, Sfax gathers us". The celebrations began with an Operetta entitled, "Sfax: Land of Resistance".
The UAE delegation was led by Afra Al Sabri, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and Knowledge Development. The UAE will contribute to Tunisia's celebrations with a variety of cultural activities.
Events scheduled over the next year include six conferences, six international meetings, eight music festivals, three film festivals, three large exhibitions, three visual arts festivals, two theatre events, two poetry events, and three events dedicated to street art, as well as other cultural and artistic happenings throughout the region planned by the Tunisian Culture Ministry.
