The current head of the Fine Arts sector of the ministry of culture, Salah El-Meleigy, intends to add the African Biennale on the cultural agenda in order to strengthen relations between Egypt and other African countries. The idea was first suggested by the art critic Mohamed Kamal. “We are almost becoming ignorant of our continent as a result of globalization,” El-Meleigy stated in a press release by the Fine Arts Sector. Minister of Culture Shaker Abdel Hamid welcomed the idea because Egypt plays an important role in African culture. African arts and literature mainly revolve around the struggle for liberation and post-colonialism, topics very relevant to Egypt, he says.
