Alton J. Myers, author of “Calico Dance,” takes his readers back to the 1967 Detroit Riot, one of the most deadly and destructive civil disturbances in U.S. history, to experience the fear and chaos of the time and how it changed his life. This “Sizzlin' Summer Surprise” (published by Xlibris) inspired Myers to pen his historical novel, which blends fact with fiction while portraying his exploits as a grad student caught in the middle of five days of anarchy.
In 1967, Myers was in his summer of study at a university in Detroit when the riot broke out in the city. In “Sizzlin' Summer Surprise,” he shows how the events of that particular summer changed the lives of the people who became entangled in the upheaval. The moving adventures of the grad students and teachers vividly capture the rebelliousness, volatility and violence that often characterize life in the 1960s. At the same time, Myers avoids blaming or interpreting the events or their outcomes, focusing instead on the personal changes that occurred to him during this time, conveying the exciting experience to his readers by putting them right there with him in the middle of the action.
“Sizzlin' Summer Surprise” is a thrilling and sometimes startling story of riots, epiphanies, life-changing adventures and, above all, the indomitable human spirit.
