Typhoon Nesat landed Vietnam's northern Quang Ninh province at noon time on Friday, and three hours later it caused damage to the local property, estimated at a loss of 50 billion Vietnamese dong (2.4 million U.S. dollars), according to the Vietnam News Agency. Local authorities reported that nearly 300 houses were broken, 11 ships and boats sunken, 33 fish rearing cages damaged, plus more than 1,600 hectares of rice fields and other crops inundated. So far, no casualties were reported. The nearby Hai Phong city was also affected by the typhoon. By 4 p.m. Friday local time, more than 2,000 local residents were evacuated and 455 ships anchored to safe areas. Local dykes were safe, but many trees were toppled, according to Hoang Xuan Binh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Do Son district, Hai Phong City. According to the Central Committee for Storm and Flood Control (CCSFC), people in northern Hai Duong and Thai Binh provinces were warned to cope with the typhoon days in advance. On Friday morning, people in the high-risk areas were evacuated, pupils were off from schools, and ships and boats were protected. There were not yet reports about damage in those provinces, said the CCSFC.
