Oman’s Minister of Transport and Communications has revealed that the first quarter of 2017 witnessed a 40 per cent rise in public transport use from last year.
"Q1 of the year saw 40% increase in public transport use from last year," Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Al Futaisi said.
He added that plans are underway to develop large parking spaces for those using public transport and that those spaces would only be available to people using public transport, to "develop large parking spaces so people can park their cars by public transport routes and use public transport to destination.
"The parking will be only for those who use public transport, so that individuals don't take advantage of these spaces,” Al Futaisi said.
Taxis to undergo change
Dr. Al Futaisi also said that taxis would undergo a major overhaul. “Taxis will undergo a major change in the way they operate. There is a social aspect to this issue, as taxi drivers are Omani.
"We hope to use advanced technology for the service, as well as protect the rights of consumers."
