A typhoon packing 90 mph winds hit the southern Japanese island of Shikoku Saturday, killing one person and leaving five others missing, officials said. Typhoon Talas, the 12th named northern Pacific storm this summer, brought heavy rain and triggered mudslides in the prefecture of Ehime, the Kyodo news agency reported. Emergency officials said 28 people had been injured and more than 3,200 residents were evacuated from their homes. Electricity to more than 76,000 homes and businesses was knocked out by winds and flooding from Talas, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The typhoon also caused the cancellation of 375 domestic and 17 international flights, Kyodo said. All train service was suspended on the island, the report said. Emergency officials said 249 people in 145 homes were stranded in one town on the island because of flooding.
